How Often Should You Wash Your Dog?

For most dog owners, it can be challenging to determine how often you should wash your dog. And the honest truth is that it depends on many factors, like their breed, lifestyle, length of coat, and how much work you’re willing to do.

This article will discuss how often you should bathe your dog.

What’s your dog's coat type?

One of the significant factors in deciding how often your dog requires a bath is its coat type. However, it’s not as simple as the shorter the hair, the less bathing will be necessary. Some dog breeds, like the Chinese Crested and the Xoloitzcuintli, require more care and weekly baths.

Then there are long-coated breeds, such as the Maltese and Collie, that require even more work. Dogs with medium-to-large coats typically require a bath every four to six weeks. It depends on if the coat is properly maintained in-between baths.

In addition, dogs with thick or double coats, like Labrador Retrievers, Siberian Huskies, or Golden Retrievers, insulate seasonally. This means that if you bathe your dog too much, you could strip a lot of oil from its skin and disrupt the process. You can use a product specifically for shedding to help avoid this problem.

Does your dog have a specific health condition?

If your dog has a health condition, you may need to use a medicated shampoo while bathing your dog if directed by your veterinarian or groomer. And even if your pet is healthy, it’s important to maintain their coat and use de-shedding tools and brushes. You should also clean your dog’s ears and trim their nails monthly.

On the other hand, if you, as the owner, suffer from allergies, you might want to consider bathing your pet on a weekly basis to get rid of your pet’s dander. There are also dander-removing shampoos to help manage your human allergies.

What is your dog’s lifestyle?

It’s been noted that short-coated breeds tend to have an easier time living an active lifestyle. That’s because keeping the dog clean in-between baths doesn’t require much effort on the owner’s part. You can typically get away with giving them a good pat down with a damp washcloth to remove any direct picked up in the backyard or during a busy visit to the dog park.

But dogs that are continuously playing in the ocean, in muddy water, or herding sheep may end up needing more regular baths than those who spend their time indoors. This applies to any breed.

And at the end of the day, if you can no longer tolerate your dog’s smell, that’s when you know it’s time to give them a bath.
